Terrah Bennett Smith

My journey has been anything but linear, but that’s what makes it so fulfilling for me. I’ve always followed my curiosity and passion, which has led me to explore many corners of the entertainment industry and my life in general. Every phase, from that little girl putting on talent shows in the projects, to Broadway, tv, and film on both sides of the camera, has helped shape the artist and mentor I am today. As well, I’m someone who gets an idea and likes to see it through.

In most cases, even if its scary, I usually jump in and once I’m in, I might have several panic attacks about actually following through, but eventually I’ll see it through to fruition. I’m a firm believer, if it comes through you, it’s for you to do.

I never thought I would find myself behind the camera. I remember years ago, I was being interviewed and was asked; if I saw myself migrating over to directing? I emphatically said NO!

I was never comfortable telling people what to do. It would take years before I dabbled into directing, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. My first directed professional piece was a stage play for a friend, and I actually enjoyed it. At that time, I found it almost as

rewarding as being in front of the camera. Producing and directing (sometimes writing) allowed me to; influence the broader narrative, collaborate at a higher level, and help bring projects to life that reflect diverse stories, that mattered to me. This allowed me to cast myself in a project if I desired.

Nothing better than working and not

having to prove yourself to casting, or the

producers or directors.

Actress. Director. Producer. Author. Mentor. Terrah Bennett Smith is a force of creative nature who has spent decades telling powerful stories—on stage, on

screen, and now, in print.

Paulette Henson, CEO of BWA Magazine, sat down with Terrah to talk about her journey, her new book, and how she’s helping others rewrite their lives.

Paulette Henson: "The title of your new book—Being Bigger, Badder, Bolder, Better —what does that mean to you?"

Terrah Bennett Smith: It’s a mindset. A declaration. “Being Bigger” means standing taller than your fears. “Being Badder” is confidence without apology. “Being Bolder” is the courage to take up space. Being Better” is the commitment to grow daily. It’s about becoming the fullest expression of yourself authentically and powerfully.
